EV & plug-in charging problems

Won't charge, charges slowly, or stops partway through. We trace the fault from the charger to the charge port, the onboard charger and the battery, and tell you which part is actually at fault.

Symptoms we diagnose

  • The car won't start charging at home, at public chargers, or both
  • Charging starts and then stops
  • Level 2 charging is much slower than it should be
  • DC fast charging fails or is limited
  • The charge cable won't lock or release
  • Charging warning lights or messages

Car or charger?

The first question is whether the fault is in the car or in what it's plugged into. We test with our own known-good equipment, so you are not replacing parts on the car when the problem is a home charger, outlet or cable. If it's your home charger or wiring, we'll tell you, so you can call an electrician.

What we check on the car

  • The charge port, its pins and its locking mechanism, which take a beating from daily plugging and Miami humidity
  • The onboard charger, which converts household AC into DC for the battery
  • The 12-volt or low-voltage battery, since a weak one causes surprising charging failures
  • Battery temperature and cooling, which limit charging speed when they are not working
  • Stored charging codes and any available software updates
